Colonial Lima The Viceroyalty of Peru was the most important of the Spanish Empire and Lima was its capital. The highlights of its historic center are the architecture and the urban design of the period, in old streets lined with colonial mansions with Moorish style balconies. The tour includes the Paseo de la Republica, Plaza San Martin and Plaza Mayor, with their distinctive buildings: the Government Palace, the Archbishop's Palace, the Cathedral and the Municipal Palace. This will be followed by a tour of the monumental Convent of San Francisco, which holds the largest exhibition of colonial religious art in America. You will admire the Choir Room and the Monks' Library and the Sacristy with its collection of paintings by Zurbaran and Rivera. Also the Grand Patio of the Main Cloister, finely decorated with Seville tiles from the 16th Century, its beautiful Moorish arches and the subterranean crypts known as the Catacombs, where you feel the presence of the colonial past. | |
